ABB is a leading global technology company that “energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future”. Known for their ability to design, engineer, and manufacture power quality and protection products, ABB’s Richmond facility specializes in the traction converters which are used by trains to convert electricity produced by their diesel engines or the electric grid into a form that the train can use. Interplan was engaged to complete the design of their approximately 64,800 USF facility Richmond, Virginia. The space is predominantly factory warehouse (+/- 57,800 USF) consisting of storage and shipping areas as well as production areas for development labs, testing, and manufacturing. The office space (+/- 7,000 USF) consists of open office space with powered glass demountable private offices, conference rooms, flexible training and breakroom, restrooms, and smaller privacy rooms and breakout spaces. The main entrance has a secure vestibule and a check-in reception area.
The interior design of the office area was designed to align with ABB’s global branding standards while incorporating the historical identity of this location with its ties to the railroad industry. As for the warehouse, the interior design focus was on functionality and safety. Bright, clean finishes were selected that were durable, easy-to-clean, and resistant to slipping and static. Special attention was also given to the lighting fixtures and lighting analysis to ensure a well-lit and productive working environment.
